ARCHITECT + EDUCATOR + RESEARCHER

ABOUT

Welcome! I'm Ghassan, an architect, researcher, and educator with a keen interest in the intersection of architecture history and theory, digital technology, and socio-political issues.   My academic journey has led me through prestigious institutions where I have nurtured this unique blend of interests, with a careful consideration for the transformative impact of digitization on physical spaces/realities. I earned my Master of Science in Architecture Design and Research and a Master of Architecture from the University of Michigan, as well as a Bachelor of Architecture from King Abdulaziz University.

In parallel with my academic pursuits, I have engaged in diverse professional roles, including teaching, research, and architectural design. These experiences have not only honed my architectural and research skills but have also fostered a deep understanding of the cultural and social aspects of architecture.

I believe in the power of architecture to create intelluctual conversations that are reflective and provokative, and I continuously seek opportunities to expand my knowledge and contribute to the field. Through this website, I aim to share insights from my journey and connect with others who are passionate about the transformative potential of architecture.

My primary research interest lies in exploring two main terretories:
First, how digital technology and data reshape territorial practices, influence cultural knowledge, and impact identity formation. This includes examining the role of media as a means of representation in the complex relationships between digital and physical territories. Through my work, I aim to delve into the intricacies of situational territorialities, focusing on the intersection of politics, digital technology, and the built environment.

DIVERSITY STATEMENT

As an individual deeply committed to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, I embrace these values in every aspect of my life. My experiences have taught me that diversity is not just a concept, but a rich tapestry that enhances our collective human experience.

I believe that every person's story, background, and identity bring invaluable dimensions to our shared existence. I celebrate diversity in all its forms – cultural, racial, gender, sexual orientation, age, and more – understanding that each unique perspective contributes to a more vibrant and understanding world.

Inclusivity for me is more than a principle; it's a way of living. I strive to ensure that everyone I interact with feels seen, heard, and valued. This commitment to inclusivity influences my approach to relationships, community involvement, and professional engagements, where I advocate for equitable treatment and opportunities for all.

Recognizing that the journey towards understanding diversity is continuous, I actively seek opportunities to expand my awareness. This includes engaging in conversations that challenge my perspectives, educating myself on issues affecting various communities, and participating in initiatives that promote equity and inclusivity.

My life's experiences have underscored the importance of empathy and understanding in bridging divides. By putting myself in others' shoes, I've gained deeper insights into the challenges and triumphs that shape our lives. This empathy guides my interactions and decisions, allowing me to contribute positively to the world around me.

I am not just a believer in diversity and inclusivity but also an advocate for change. I actively work to dismantle barriers and biases, both in my personal circles and broader communities. By speaking out against injustice and supporting policies and practices that promote diversity, I hope to contribute to a more equitable and just society.

TEACHING STATEMENT

As an educator in architecture and urban planning, my teaching philosophy is centered on nurturing critical thinking, creativity, and intellectual exploration. My aim is to guide students through the intricate layers of architectural and urban theory, encouraging them to question, analyze, and reimagine the spaces we inhabit.

In my humble experience as a teaching assistant, I emphasized the importance of critical thinking and a robust understanding of theoretical frameworks. I challenged students to engage deeply with historical and contemporary theories in architecture and urban planning, fostering an environment where questioning and critical analysis are not just encouraged but are fundamental to the learning process.

I believe in the power of exploration and creativity in shaping future architects and planners. My teaching approach encourages students to push the boundaries of conventional design and planning practices, inspiring them to explore innovative and unorthodox ideas. This includes considering the social, cultural, and philosophical dimensions of architecture and urban environments.

Recognizing the interdisciplinary nature of architecture and urban planning, I integrate perspectives from sociology, history, art, and technology into my teaching. This approach helps students understand the multifaceted impact of their work and the importance of considering a wide range of influences in their designs and planning strategies.

I foster a classroom environment where dialogue and collaboration are key. Through discussions, critiques, and group projects, students are encouraged to share their ideas and learn from one another, cultivating a rich, diverse intellectual community.

My role as an educator extends beyond imparting knowledge; it involves inspiring students to become lifelong learners and thinkers. I encourage them to pursue their intellectual curiosities and to view their education as a starting point for a journey of continuous exploration and discovery in the field.

I am committed to a student-centered approach, adapting my teaching methods to cater to diverse learning styles and interests. This includes providing personalized mentorship and creating a supportive learning environment where all students feel empowered to explore their full potential.
